As a child, Charlotte was always outdoors, enjoying nature. Studying Biology therefore felt like a natural choice. After completing a master’s degree with a specialisation in Ecotoxicology, she had many career options open to her: as a consultant, researcher or lecturer. “While I was exploring what I wanted to do, I gave private lessons to biology students. I really enjoyed that. However, I didn’t see myself working solely in education. I wanted to stay in touch with research.”

The missing piece

And then the missing puzzle piece appeared: a vacancy at HZ. “This job was the ideal mix of education, applied research and theory, so it perfectly matched what I was looking for.” Charlotte applied and initially started with a two-month employment. “At first it was a temporary replacement, but I’ve now been working here for two years and recently received a permanent contract. I’m very happy about that. To put it in marine terms: this job is truly a pearl!”

Innovations in aquaculture

Charlotte’s research team supports innovative entrepreneurs in the aquaculture sector with the challenges and questions they face. “For example, oyster farmers noticed that the population of the flat oyster, which is native to the delta area, was declining. We investigated the causes and ways to turn the tide. Monitoring became one of our recommendations.”

So diverse

This is just one of the many research questions Charlotte works on. “It’s sometimes difficult to explain exactly what I do, simply because it’s so diverse. That’s actually what I love about my job. One day I’m out in the field. The next day I’m visiting a company. Then I’m working on research at HZ, and the day after that I’m teaching in the classroom.”

Meaningful work

Helping to further develop aquaculture in Zeeland and contributing to the food transition gives Charlotte a great sense of fulfilment. “It’s wonderful to do meaningful work and contribute to a healthy natural environment. I see the same passion in all my colleagues and in the students as well. Everyone is enthusiastic.”

In doubt? Go for it!

Finally, for anyone who is unsure whether a job in education might be right for them, Charlotte has some encouraging advice: “Just dive in. It will definitely be a valuable experience that you can learn from. You won’t regret it.”
